Your camera preview will appear here
Snapshot
This is exactly what your camera captured — use it to check focus, lighting, and framing before a call.
How to use the webcam test
Running a webcam test online takes less than a minute and needs no software install.
Follow these four steps to confirm your camera is working before your next call.
Click Start webcam
Your browser will ask for camera permission — click Allow. If nothing happens, check the address bar for a blocked camera icon.
Check the live preview
Make sure the picture is sharp, well-lit, and not frozen. Switch cameras from the dropdown if you have more than one connected.
Read the resolution & FPS
The badges over the preview show the real resolution and frame rate your camera is currently streaming.
Take a snapshot if needed
Capture a still frame to double-check framing and lighting, then download it or head back to the live view.
Why Use This Webcam Test?
Test resolution, frame rate, and live filters, right in your browser.
Live preview
See exactly what your camera sees before you join a call, so there are no surprises when others can.
Resolution & FPS readout
Shows whether the webcam is running at 15, 30, 60 FPS, etc., along with the actual resolution — not just what it claims to support.
Instant snapshot
Capture a still frame to check focus, lighting, and framing, then download it with one click.
Live filters
Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, sepia, grayscale, hue, invert, and blur in real time, and bake them into your saved snapshot too.
Common Webcam Problems
Most webcam issues fall into a short list of usual suspects — a blocked permission, another app holding the camera, or a driver that needs a nudge. Here's what to check first for the most common symptoms.
| Problem | Common cause |
|---|---|
| No camera prompt appears | Camera permission was previously blocked for this site, or another permission dialog is already open in a different tab. |
| Black or frozen preview | A physical lens cover or privacy shutter is closed, or another app (a video call, another tab) is already using the camera. |
| "Camera is already in use" error | Another application has an exclusive lock on the device — close video call apps, other browser tabs, or background recording software. |
| Blurry or out-of-focus image | A dirty lens, autofocus struggling in low light, or a fixed-focus webcam that's simply too close to the subject. |
| Low resolution or choppy video | An older or budget webcam capped at a low native resolution, or a slow USB port/hub limiting bandwidth. |
| Camera not listed in the dropdown | An outdated or missing driver, a disabled device in system settings, or a loose USB connection. |
About This Webcam Test Tool
This webcam test runs entirely in your browser using the standard WebRTC camera API, the same technology behind video calling apps. There's nothing to install and nothing to sign up for — click Start webcam, allow access, and your live preview appears immediately.
Beyond just showing a picture, it reads back the actual resolution and frame rate your camera is delivering in real time, so you can catch a driver capping it lower than expected. You can switch between multiple connected cameras, flip mirroring on or off to see what others actually see on a call, view the feed fullscreen, and grab a snapshot to check focus and lighting before an important meeting.
Everything happens locally on your device — no video is recorded, streamed, or sent to any server, and the camera turns off the moment you click Stop or leave the page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything to test my webcam?
No. This test uses your browser's built-in camera API, so there's nothing to download or install — just click Start webcam and allow camera access when your browser asks.
My browser isn't asking for camera permission — what do I do?
Check the address bar for a camera or padlock icon — permission may already be blocked from a previous visit. Click it, set Camera to Allow, then reload the page and click Start webcam again. If nothing appears at all, another site or app may already have the permission dialog open.
The preview is black or frozen — is my camera broken?
Not necessarily. A black preview is usually a software conflict, not a hardware failure — check if a physical lens cover or privacy shutter is closed, close other apps that might be using the camera (video calls, other browser tabs), and try switching devices in the dropdown if you have more than one camera.
Why does my video look mirrored?
Browsers mirror the self-view by default, the same way a mirror does, so text on a shirt can appear backwards to you even though it looks normal to everyone else on a call. This test mirrors the preview by default too, but you can turn mirroring off with the toggle to see exactly what other people see.
Can this test detect low resolution or a slow frame rate?
Yes. Once your camera is running, the test reads back the actual resolution and frame rate your camera is delivering, so you can tell whether it's running at full quality or has been capped low by the app, driver, or a slow USB connection.
Is this webcam test free, and is my video recorded or uploaded anywhere?
It's completely free with no sign-up. Your video never leaves your device — everything runs locally in your browser, and nothing is recorded, streamed, or uploaded to any server. A snapshot is only saved if you choose to download one yourself.
